Beauty for Busy Mums – My TV appearance

Whilst the world awaited the imminent arrival of Royal baby no.2, the media was in its collective frenzy and every news feed was about the Duchess of Cambridge.  She was looking stunning as always and was still walking around in heels whilst most of us looked on in pregnancy envy.  At 9-months, I resembled a waddling walrus and needed help putting my ‘flats’ on.

Anyway, having recently taken up a bit of tweeting during the Captain’s feed time, I came across a Tweet by ITV’s This Morning asking for busy mum viewers, seeking a beauty pick-me-up, to make contact with the show.

Looking not particularly glam at the time; with sick down my top, crazy hair and lazy day clothes, I was quick to respond with a ‘dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards’ full length photo.  These days it is an accomplishment to sip at a warm cup of tea, so can a new mum really be expected to look any different?  Most definitely not!

The producer must have seen my photo and felt extremely sorry for me, shortly after pointing and laughing, because she contacted me the next day.  Typically, I was busy dealing with a nappy surprise just as the phone rang.  I could see it flashing a 0207 number which only meant one thing, a call from Central London and probably from ITV.  Cr4p – literally!

I called the number straight back and left a voice message, there went my chance, I thought!  I kept my phone close by and thankfully she called me back.  In just a couple of minutes we had discussed my non-existent beauty regime in great detail, just to make me feel worse I’m sure and a suitable time to be picked up by car, in the MORNING!  From then on it was mass panic!  I had no make-up and nothing to wear with less than 24-hours to go before appearing live on National TV.  What had I done?

The usual 1-hour task of getting baby and I ready to leave the house, sink and all, had somehow took just 15-minutes.  I was at the shops in no time.  Completely out of my depth when it comes to make-up, I asked the lady at the No.7 Boots counter to rescue me in choosing one of the 50 different types of foundation available.

I was yet to find an outfit so had no time to waste.  An hour later, I was sat at the No.7 counter being ‘made-over’ and having a girly chat, well she had insisted!

Next stop, was outfit shopping.  Now anyone who truly knows me, knows this to be true.  I usually spend forever walking around a store gathering about 10 items of clothing that I will never wear before trying them all on and confirming that I will definitely never wear them whilst getting myself in a huff.  Usually resulting in me then steaming out of the shop insisting on how fat and ugly I look in everything I try on!  Indeed this was going to be a mission and to make matters worse, the Captain was an hour away from wanting his next feed.  FML!

I nabbed one of the shop assistants to help me in selecting an outfit and it turned out she was a genius.  She had worked a miracle – black skinny jeans and a floral top – who would have thought it?

Sure enough, the 4am alarm sounded before we knew it and I dived out of bed.  There was no way I would be late, I was usually late for everything.  Trevor had managed to get the day off work so that he could come with me and take care of Jack.

The car arrived and we was on the M4 heading towards London in no time.  When we arrived at the ITV Studios the nerves struck, what the hell was I doing?  We was taken through a maze of props to the Studio and was greeted by Fleur, our hostess-with-the-mostest, for the day and that she was.

Once our make-up had been completed by Bryony Blake, make-up artist to the stars, we was taken through to the Studio for rehearsals.  The studio was tiny and the lights beamed bright enough to warrant sunglasses.  It was all eyes and cameras on us whilst we were quizzed on the spot to see how we responded to quick fire questions.

Just before noon, we were taken back through to the Studio to get ready for our big moment.  Apparently, we was only going live to an expected 2.5million viewers so I shouldn’t worry.  I prayed that I not make myself look a complete ass live on TV.

3-2-1 and we was live to the nation, Bryony did what she did best and presented her piece like a pro whilst applying creams and such to my face.  Amanda Holden and Philip Schofield were on set doing their bit and all I could think was, ‘please don’t ask me anything, please don’t even talk to me’ but they did, in fact my mate Phil decided to make reference to my boobs.

Yeh cheers Phil!  I just grinned and kept my usually cheeky mouth firm shut.  You can watch the video clip here: Beauty for Busy Mums.

Our trip to the Studio was just what the doctor had ordered.  It had been a welcomed break from the much loved nappy changing, baby feeding and burping routine.

It had been a super fab day and all for the sake of a quick Tweet!  The entire crew had been so welcoming and have no idea just how much they cheered me up that day.  Thanks ITV!

Needless to say, I had been ‘famous’ for all of 5-minutes and I have since been inundated with messages suggesting ‘I get my nipps’ out for Phil’.

So true Louise, I feel like rubbish most days but would rather make a fuss of Jack than make myself look pretty! Change of priorities 🙂 xx
